A traditional incense blend for the Tibetan Buddhist practice of Sur (Aroma) Offering. “Sur” refers to the smell of roasted flour that is offered to smell eaters and spirits. Our Sur Offering Tibetan Incense Powder is formulated from 25 essential ingredients — the five scented substances, five medicines, five grains, five jewels and five essences — and is ready to use without the need for additional edible substances.

Benefits

  • Helps the deceased during the intermediate state (49 days).
  • Brings peace and nourishment to restless spirits, bardo beings, smell eaters, etc.
  • Pacifies obstacles, bad situations and the causes of illness.
  • Relieves karmic debts.
  • Increases success, wealth, good fortune and harmony.
  • Accumulates vast merits for spiritual growth and swift attainments.
  • Creates conditions for good rebirths in pure lands or as human beings.
  • Benefits sentient beings in all six realms.

Sur offering can be practised daily, or as and when you wish. The best times for practising sur are in the morning or at night. However, it can be done at any other time of the day.

In Tibet, sur is traditionally offered after sunset for 49 days following the death of a loved one. When performed with sincere motivation, this aromatic offering is a powerful act of generosity, compassion and purification that benefits both the living and the deceased.

  • Set out the sur offering.
Place the desired amount of sur offering powder in a clean, undamaged heat-proof offering bowl or bowl-style incense burner.
  • Set the offering substances alight.
For best results, use a small jet-flame lighter. This helps the sur offering to burn well with minimal smoke, and allows the aroma of the food substances to be enjoyed.
  • Recite the Sur offering prayers.
This is an important step to allow the recipients to enjoy the aroma offerings. You can use the Simplified Sur Offering Prayer below — this is the recommended version for practitioners without initiation.
  • Optional: Enrich your sur offering by adding some tsampa (roasted barley flour) mixed with the 3 white substances (milk, butter, yogurt) and the 3 sweet substances (sugar, jaggery, honey) to the powder mixture before burning.
  • Other uses: Add a small amount of Sur Incense Powder to retreat tormas, puja tormas, or serkym offering to increase their potency and effectiveness.
  • Always burn in moderate quantities to prevent overheating.
  • Never leave unattended.
