Kechara Forest Retreat is home to a variety of furry and feathered friends rescued over the years by our founder H.E. Tsem Rinpoche. From abandoned fish to unwanted birds suffering in neglect, these animals have found a new lease of life in this forest sanctuary.

Our rescued animals receive care and attention from a dedicated team looking after their physical and spiritual needs. Wherever the animals live are holy Buddha statues alongside speakers playing recordings of pujas and mantras to plant powerful imprints in their minds for their future lives.

When you adopt one of our animals, you are helping them get the best care. Your contribution will go towards the cost of food, supplements, medication, healthcare, upkeep of their habitat, toys and more for one year.

In appreciation, a Medicine Buddha Puja will be dedicated to your health and well-being.

Meet Our Animals

DECHOG

A young male cockatoo who was first brought to the Aviary as a companion for Drolkar, our first cockatoo. Their match was not one made in heaven but over time, the playful and inquisitive Dechog eventually won Drolkar’s heart. Dechog responds to gentle whistles and likes to be petted once he is familiar with you.

BOY

Previously kept as a pet by a family in Kuala Lumpur, Boy was confined in a small cage that was exposed to direct sunlight. The hot and cramped living conditions were so unbearable that he kept screaming all-day for help. Out of compassion, Rinpoche offered to adopt Boy. Initially reluctant, Boy's owners eventually agreed after realising that Rinpoche was a strong advocate for animal welfare. These days, Boy (or Ah Boy to some) is a chatty, happy and affectionate bird. He loves basking in the spotlight and may even swoop down to sit on your shoulder and nibble your ear!

JAMYANG

In mid-2012, Jamyang was found chained to a perch in a tiny, claustrophobic cage with no proper ventilation or sunlight. The lively African Grey was quickly rescued by Rinpoche and brought to the Aviary. Having recovered from his ordeal, Jamyang now loves interacting with people. Playful and sociable, he can “speak” English, Chinese and Nepali. If you're lucky, he may even say “Hello!” to you.

THE COCKATOOS AND BUDGIES

The 4,000 sq. ft. walk-in aviary is also home to over 30 smaller birds including cockatoos and budgies.

THE FISH

The Dream Manjushri Fish Pond is one of the aquatic sanctuaries in Kechara Forest Retreat. The crystal clear waters are home to over 100 fish of various sizes.

About Kechara Forest Retreat

“Since I was a young child, I wanted to create a place where people come together to live as one with nature, one with the earth; a place for healing, detoxification, contemplation, relaxation and retreat.

An international centre for meditation courses not based on religion but tapping into ourselves and our potential. A place for eco-living modelled on sustainability and growth.

This project is Kechara Forest Retreat and it will be a space to inspire the world to do the same in their own communities.”

– Tsem Rinpoche

Since our inception in 2012, Kechara Forest Retreat has grown to become a renowned Tibetan Buddhist Retreat and Wellness centre, known for result-focused spiritual and meditational programmes.

Our 35-acre centre in the exurban forest enclave of Bentong, Pahang is also a sacred ground, home to a pantheon of Tibetan deities and holy sites. It is here, amidst the lush verdant highlands that we impart a contemporary presentation of Buddhist teachings and practices, to bring you closer to Buddha’s wisdom in the Tibetan spiritual tradition.
