About Prayer Wheels

The tradition of spinning prayer wheels descends from Arya Nagarjuna, the eminent Buddhist scholar who is also the founder of the profound Middle Way school of Buddhist philosophy. The prayer wheel lineage was passed on through great Indian and Tibetan masters including Guru Rinpoche, Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa and Milarepa, and remains popular in modern times.

Prayer wheel practice is a powerful method of purifying negative karma, accumulating merit and blessing yourself, the environment and all sentient beings. The cylinder, along with the mantra roll it contains, can be kept turning clockwise with a slight rotation of the wrist. This activates the prayer wheel, generating tremendous merits and distributing exponential blessings and positive wishes for all beings.

Every spin of the wheel is akin to reciting the amount of mantras it contains, and will create a strong connection to the Buddha whose mantra is associated with it.

  • Begin the session by touching the prayer wheel to your forehead.
  • Spin the prayer wheel clockwise, holding it above the level of your waist.
  • If you are sitting down, you can rest the handle of the prayer wheel on your knee especially if it is heavy.
  • Spin the prayer wheel with your left hand if you aspire to receive Vajrayogini's tantra in the future.
  • Spin the prayer wheel with your right hand if you are a Vajrayogini practitioner and wish to keep your practice secret.
  • End the session by touching the prayer wheel to your forehead once again.
  • The prayer wheel can be used while circumambulating, reciting mantras, during your sadhana, and even while watching TV.
  • When not in use, keep it on your altar or store with other holy items. It is best to keep the prayer wheel standing upright in a container of pearls or semi-precious stones.
  • Do not pack or store the prayer wheel with inappropriate items.
  • Do not drop the prayer wheel or take it to the bathroom.
  • If you happen to damage or drop your prayer wheel, try to repair it. If it is damaged beyond repair, take the mantra roll out and insert it into a new prayer wheel.
