A limited-edition blessed mala (prayer beads or Buddhist rosary) made from 108 Dragon Wood beads, also known as six-line or six-grain wood.

Design Highlights:

  • 108 dragon wood beads.
  • Infused with Manjushri's wisdom energy and blessings.

Our Dragon Wood beads are specially sourced from the slopes of sacred Wutaishan (Mount Wutai) in China. Buddha mentioned in the sutras that Wutaishan is located between his eyebrows and that is where Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, would reside to teach and benefit sentient beings. Thus, Manjushri's blessings pervade all of Wutaishan and everything that grows in that region.

Each mala bead is painstakingly hand-carved and has exactly six lines of natural wood grain, which symbolises OM MANI PEME HUM, the mantra of Chenrezig or Guanyin. The six lines also symbolise being free of rebirth in the six realms of existence — in other words, the achievement of enlightenment.

Dragon wood is well known for its dense texture and smooth surface, making it very hardy and virtually unbreakable. The dragon wood shrub also grows very slowly, making such malas very rare and highly prized by Buddhists the world over.

Using a mala

  • Hold the mala at the level of your heart.
  • You can use either hand to hold the mala. Traditionally, the left hand is used for Mother Tantras and the right hand is used for Father Tantras.
  • Pull each mala bead towards you as you chant. Use one bead to count one mantra.
  • The mala can rest on any finger. Each finger represents a different aspect of enlightened activity — index finger (pacification), middle finger (growth), ring finger (control), little finger (wrath).
  • Blow on your mala to bless it after completing the mantra recitation session.
  • You can also recite the Blessing the Rosary mantra OM RUCHIRA MANI PRAVARTAYA HUM seven times then blow on your mala before starting the prayer session. This increases the power of the mantras you recite 1,000,000 times.
  • Use in combination with a mala counter for extended chanting sessions.
  • Don’t leave your mala lying about. Keep in a small bag or pouch when not in use to protect your mala and keep it clean.
  • Do not bring into the toilet.

Tips for effective mantra chanting

  • Chant loud enough for you to hear yourself.
  • Whispering is okay but silent chanting is not.
  • Chant softly so you don’t disturb others around you.
  • Don’t chant too fast. Enunciate each syllable, don’t rush or stumble.
  • Don’t chant mindlessly. Focus on the visualisation or the sound of the mantra.
