About the Guru Tree

The Guru Tree, or more correctly the Merit Field, depicts a central guru figure, together with all the lineage masters, Buddhas, Yidams, Bodhisattvas, Arhats and Dharma protectors of a particular tradition. The merit field is visualised during certain meditations and powerful pujas, such as Lama Chopa. Depictions of the merit field are extremely holy and sacred images for our altars.

For practitioners, the merit field embodies not only the whole lineage through which the tradition descends, from its origin down to our own teacher, but the benefits of the various meditational practices within the tradition as well. It represents all the worldly and spiritual blessings that the Buddhas can bestow, representing the ultimate in personal growth.

In the Gelug tradition, the central figure is known as Lama Lobsang Thubwang Dorje Chang. This deity represents our own guru, together with Lama Tsongkhapa, Buddha Shakyamuni and the Buddha Vajradhara all in one form. The merit field is visualised at the peak of a celestial tree, which is why it is common referred to as the Guru Tree.

Above the central figure are the lineage masters either in vertical columns or in groups floating on clouds. Under the central figure appear horizontal rows of Yidams, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Arhats and Dharma protectors. Traditionally, depictions include the Four Heavenly Kings under the tree, as well as figures praying and various types of offerings.
