Considered the most complex of mandalas, the Kalachakra mandala represents the abode of the tantric deity Kalachakra and his entourage. It is also known as the “time wheel" and consists of 722 deities, jewels, flowers and animals.
Although it is depicted here on a flat surface, Kalachakra's mandala is visualised as a three-dimensional, five-storied divine palace, at the heart of which resides Kalachakra and his consort Vishvamata.
Kalachakra's tantra is one of the highest yoga tantras and was taught by Buddha Shakyamuni. Practitioners of his tantra aspire to take rebirth in the mystical land of Shambhala, where they can practice in peace without disturbances.
The four surrounding rings represent the four main elements — air, fire, water, and earth, while the five levels of the palace, starting from the outermost level represent:
- The mandala of the enlightened body
- The mandala of the enlightened speech
- The mandala of the enlightened mind
- The mandala of the enlightened wisdom
- The mandala of great bliss
