Description

Details

A contemporary interpretation of the traditional Buddhist Great Retreat (Lo Sum Choe Sum), where a hermit is seen emerging from his meditation cave with a state of higher consciousness. Having gained a vision of Dorje Shugden, he is in direct communion with this emanation of the Buddha of Wisdom, Manjushri.

H.E. Tsem Rinpoche commissioned this thangka to represent communion beyond anger, ego, materialism and the "I", that brings so much pain and suffering. In this thangka, the hermit who understands the deceptive ways of the world withdraws into a cave. In solitude, he meditates and focuses fully on gaining higher states of consciousness that transcends this life and its triviality.

Upon completing his retreat, the hermit’s mind becomes of the same nature as Dorje Shugden’s, awakened from Samsara. He has ascended beyond wealth, fame, power, beauty, materialism and the other trappings of Samsara. Having achieved mystical union with an awakened being, Dorje Shugden, the hermit is able to see the true nature of his own mind and that of Samsara. With this clarity, he gains direct visions of this powerful protector.

The hermit’s secret Yidam is Lama Tsongkhapa, an emanation of Chenrezig, Manjushri and Vajrapani, whose image can be seen imprinted on the wall at the entrance of the cave. Subtly painted into the natural environment, unseen beings congregate around these two enlightened beings to witness this auspicious moment of mystic union.

This stunning work of art can grace a shrine wall, living room or work space, to keep you reminded of your spiritual goals and that Enlightenment is in your hands.
