This printed thangka depicts the 21 Taras with Green Tara, one of the most beloved deities in Tibetan Buddhism, in the central position. It is mounted on a traditional brocade frame with cloud and dragon motifs.

Tara is the female Buddha of enlightened activity. Due to her supreme compassion, she manifests in different forms to benefit us. These manifestations reflect the many needs of sentient beings, including protection, long life, peace, removal of obstacles and saving beings from danger.

Her activities encompass pacifying, increasing, overpowering and wrathful aspects. Each is represented by a different colour:

  • White: Symbolises the enlightened activity of pacification such as overcoming sickness, causes of untimely death and obstacles to success in one’s life and Dharma practice.

  • Yellow: Represents the enlightened activity of increasing the positive qualities conducive for a long life, peace, happiness and success in one’s life and Dharma practice.

  • Red: Symbolises the enlightened activity of power or overpowering external forces that cannot be tamed through the first two activities. For example, removing obstacles to sickness and untimely death, and forcefully accumulating conducive conditions for one’s Dharma practice.

  • Black: Represents the enlightened activity of wrath, which involves using forceful methods for accomplishing activities for enlightened purposes that cannot be accomplished through other means.
Green Tara is the main form of Tara, who made a vow to always return as a female Bodhisattva. She exudes an aura of emerald green, radiant with the attainment of the Six Perfections of giving, ethics, patience, effort, meditative stabilisation and wisdom, and bright with her ever-compassionate care for all sentient beings. Renowned for her swiftness to come in aid of those who sincerely invoke her in prayers, this Female Buddha is a firm favourite among Tibetan Buddhists.
