Directly above him is Lama Tsongkhapa, the great 14th century Tibetan scholar and saint. On Lama Tsongkhapa's right is his heart disciple, Gyaltsab Rinpoche, and on his left is his other heart disciple, Khedrub Rinpoche.
Dharmapala or Dharma Protector Setrap is a wrathful emanation of the Buddha Amitabha. He is an ancient protector who comes from the Holy Land of Bodhgaya, where Lord Shakyamuni Buddha himself was enlightened. Setrap’s role is to protect the teachings of Buddhism and to make the Dharma grow. His fierce demeanour is similar to that of angry parents towards their wayward children ~ hoping to wake them to their senses and bring them onto the correct path.
Though in a wrathful form, Setrap is always motivated by compassion and loving care for all sentient beings. He is known for swiftly destroying the outer, inner and secret obstacles in our spiritual path such as anger, attachment, ignorance and our self-cherishing attitude. His practice also grants incredible protection from black magic. Having an image of him close to us or in our homes bestows immense blessings and protection on our surroundings and ourselves.
